What to consider when building your coop.

We have had a few chicken coops over the years. My first coop was absolutely amazing…and elaborate. I wanted to do all the things when I got started with chickens. It was lovely though! Since then (and now that we have around 150 chickens), I have chosen to focus more on practicality and what's really needed, while still adding some cute touches.

Baby Chicks 101

Spring will soon be here and for many of us, you know what that means…it’s baby chick Season!!! Having baby chicks for the first time is SO MUCH FUN!!! Well, it’s always fun even if it’s not your first time. My girls and I still get excited over them every time a new baby is hatched or we pick up a box from the post office! Sigh…so sweet. Now, if you're reading this before getting chicks, great job!

Deworming your chickens

One thing I never really thought about when I got started with chickens was that they would need to be de-wormed. Since chickens scratch and peck all over the ground, often sharing space with other farm animals and even wild birds, they will inevitably come in contact with parasitic organisms that are in the manure of those other animals. Hence, the need for deworming.

Now that you're here, I'll tell you a little bit about us and what you can expect to find here. We live in Northern California and recently moved from our last home on a sweet little 2.5-acre parcel of land, to a beautiful 80-acre historical ranch. My husband and I both grew up in what most people would call regular suburban households. I went through life assuming I would follow my "plan" of becoming a financial planner and have a normal suburban life. I ended up in the polar opposite of that and couldn’t be more grateful!

If I could describe how I would love to live, it would be to have a Magnolia (a.k.a. gorgeous) home and The Biggest Little Farm property. I know…dreamy, right? Well, we aren’t quite there yet, but the journey has begun at least… and to be completely honest, it has taken us in a different direction than we had ever thought. At times it has been messy, chaotic and laugh out loud crazy, but most importantly, has brought us to a greater understanding of what living well looks like for us and created a deep desire within me to share that with others as well.
